Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School-Parent Compact

EastLake Elementary School jointly develops the Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School-Parent Compact through School Site Council. A Title I Annual Parent Meeting is held at the beginning of the school year to share information about Title I, the programs at the school, and how parents can provide input into this policy and the compact. The Parent and Family Engagement Policy is distributed during the first quarter of the school year at Coffee with the Principal, School Site Council, ELAC and at the fall Parent-Teacher Conference. Additionally, the Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School-Parent Compact is distributed to parents via School Messenger and is posted on the school website.

Parent Teacher Conferences September 12th-19th

Our school will be hosting Parent Teacher Conferences for grades TK-6th Grade Students beginning Thursday, September 12th through Thursday September 19th.  During that time, our TK-6th Grade students will be on Minimum Day Schedule.  Families, please plan accordingly for the early release schedule during conferences.

Teachers will be reaching out to schedule a time to meet with all families to get to know your students and share a little bit about what they have been working on here at school.  We look forward to this time with our families!

Independent Study Contracts:

If your child is out of school for 3 or more consecutive days, we encourage you to request an Independent Study Agreement from our school attendance office. This will help ensure that your child stays on track with their studies during their absence.

Please note the following guidelines:

  • Parents may request an Independent Study Agreement for up to 14 days per academic year.
  • For students in special education, the maximum is 10 days per academic year.

To request an Independent Study Agreement, please contact the school attendance office as soon as you are aware of your child’s upcoming absence. This will allow us ample time to prepare the necessary materials. Teachers will need at least one-week notice to be able to prepare these materials.

Missing just two days each month will result in a student being considered chronically absent. Data suggests that chronic absenteeism can hurt a child’s math and reading skills in the long-run!

Traffic Safety

Safety is of utmost importance to us here at EastLake.  Please make sure to follow the traffic patterns and not leave your car unless you are in a parking stall or on the street.  Here are some friendly reminders for our parking lot:

  • Park cars in marked stalls or on the street
    • Cars should not be left double parked and blocking cars parked in spaces
    • Cars are not to be parked in handicap loading areas
    • Cars without handicap placards are not allowed to park in handicap spaces
  • No parking on RED curbs
    • Do not leave your car unattended at red curbs.
  • Use crosswalks
  • Follow the traffic patterns within the parking lot
  • Allow time for drop off and pick up
    • Gates open at 7:45 for breakfast and track.  The lot is empty at that time!
  • Keep traffic moving

If we all work together to follow the expectations, the traffic will flow smoothly, and everyone will get to their destination safely.  Thank you for your cooperation.

This Week at EastLake – July 29-Aug. 2

What a great first week of school

It was a spectacular first week for our Eagles. Our students are adjusting well to their new classrooms and exemplifying our EastLake traits of being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind. We applaud your efforts and support at home with the new routines at the beginning of the year.

EastLake School Site Council – Elections

EastLake School Site Council has an opening for one parent this year. If you would like to be on the ballet, please email me at cynthia.orr@cvesd.org. Elections will be via Parent survey during the week of August 10th-16th.

Our meetings are about once a month on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00 pm at EastLake Elementary.

The School Site Council serves as the school community representative body for determining the focus of the school’s academic instructional program and all related categorical resources. The Legislative intent for the formation of School Site Councils is that individuals who are most affected by the operation of the school should have a major role in the decisions regarding how a school functions. Education should be a joint effort of parents, teachers, administrators, and other school staff – those whose common goal is the success of all students.

EastLake Parent Organizations

Hi Everyone,

Every school usually has a few and we are no different. The goals of the various organizations are quite different, but they all have a common goal and that is to provide support to the school. EastLake is an amazing school with a tremendous amount of volunteers and because of this our school is a standout in the community. If you’d like more info on any of them or want to get involved please let me know:

  • PTA (Parent Teacher Organization). The parents who volunteer to be part of this group give a tremendous amount of time and energy, but it is completely voluntary. Most families contribute financially by becoming members of the PTA. Others however have a desire to be directly involved with some of the different events such as our upcoming Fall Festival or our EastLake Idol show to name a couple. The majority of the funds raised by the PTA go directly back to the school providing playground equipment, assemblies, teacher supplies, and just about anything else the school needs to support the students.
  • School Site Council is a combination of parents and staff members whose main goal is to oversee the school budget and it goals for the year. On our SSC we have 5 parents (who are elected into office by you) and 4 staff members (elected by other staff). Each year the SSC makes key decisions as to how funding should be utilized to make our school as efficient and successful as possible. Elections are held each year, so if your interested please let us know.
  • Another important group is our English Language Advisory Committee. This is a voluntary group of parents who come together to support those students who are learning English. The committee meets once a month and learns what the school is doing with our EL students as well as what parents can do at home to support achievement. In addition, the committee provides recommendations and suggestions to the school so we know what parents need to support their kids. With around 17% of our population being categorized as English Learners, this is a growing group so it is critical that we have an open source of communication between school and home and our ELAC volunteers is a critical part of our success. If you would like more information about this committee please email melissa.hernandez@cvesd.org

Our Morning Expectations

Students will line up at their classroom line letters on the blacktop. Line letters will be posted on classroom doors and their will be lots of adults to help. Students should not arrive on campus before 7:45am, as there is no supervision. Gates will open at 7:45 am, no earlier. Between 7:45 and 8:10am, students should be in one of the following three places:

  1. Students can be at the tables eating breakfast. Breakfast is from 7:45-8:10. The cafeteria closes at 8:10.
  2. Students can participate in Running Club (all students and families are welcome). At this time, it is running or walking the track.
  3. Standing in line in front of their classroom letter on the blacktop.  The only exception would be TK and Kinder students who line up in front of their classroom.
  4. At 8:10am (first bell), students who are in Running Club or at the lunch tables should make their way to the classroom lines on the blacktop. We will dismiss each classroom line to walk to their classroom. They will meet their teacher at the door when the second bell rings at 8:15am.

At 8:15, teachers will open their doors, take out their backpack cart, and invite students in for a day of learning.

Morning supervision:

  • Students should not be dropping off backpacks by the classroom first.
  • Students should not be bringing their own playground equipment or trading cards/toys.
  • No eating on the blacktop.
  • Students should not be on their cell phones on campus. If your child needs to contact you, they just need to ask and talk to you with a noon duty or teacher present.
  • All cell phones, need to be given to teachers until the end of the day.
  • No students should be by their classroom or in the center open area except TK and Kinder students.

Please help us by encouraging your student(s) to follow our morning procedures.  Teachers will work with classes so that students know what the expectations are.

Thank you for your support in keeping students safe.

2024-2025 School Year Calendar

Absence Guidelines

Here are some of the absence requirements for this school year.  Please keep these items in mind:

  • Please call the office to report any absences and the reason for the absence.
    • Excused Absences: illness, doctor appointments for the student, military engagements (ex. ceremony, return from deployment), death of an immediate family member, etc.
    • Unexcused Absences:  appointments for other family members, out of town, vacations, etc.
    • Independent Study:  If you know ahead that your child might need to miss school (ex. family reunion), please contact your child’s teacher and our office to set up an independent study contract.  Independent Study contracts are available for 3 or more days, but not more than 14 cumulative days in a school year.  Independent Study Contracts should be requested at least one week in advance.
    • Tardy:  Students are considered tardy if they are not in class by 8:15am.
    • COVID absences are cleared with a POSITIVE test result.

General Information

  • Students are encouraged to come with their own water bottle to school to stay hydrated
  • Volunteers will be welcomed on campus again this year.  Stay tuned for more information.
  • We will continue to have parents/families outside at arrival each morning.
  • At dismissal, Preschool, TK and K will all dismiss from the Kindergarten area to an adult. Bus riders will be escorted to the bus.

Supplies

There is nothing that a student is required to have to start school next week. Items that are helpful are a backpack, lunch box (if bringing food) and a water bottle.  Basic school supplies will be provided here at EastLade.  Stay tuned for more information from your child’s teacher in the coming weeks.

Traffic and Safety

For your review, here are the traffic and parking lot expectations:

  • Red Curbs – “as required under California Vehicle Code Section 21458(a)(1), a curb painted red shall indicate no stopping, standing, or parking whether the vehicle is attended or unattended.”
  • Yellow curbs are for loading and unloading only – cars should not be parked and left unattended.  If you are on a yellow curb, you should be in your vehicle to move as the traffic is moving.
  • The left lane in the parking lot is for traffic to move through. Parking/stopping in the left lane blocks cars from being able to exit.  Students should not exit or enter vehicles that are in the left lane.
  • Use crosswalks for crossing the street and parking lot. When dropping students off, please be sure that they exit the vehicle on the right so that they get out directly onto the sidewalk closest to the school building.
  • Follow traffic patterns and do not double park along parking spaces.

Thank you, in advance, for following these expectations and for keeping our students safe.

Meals for Breakfast and Lunch this Year

Breakfast (before school) and Lunch will be provided for students free of charge again this year for those who would like it. Students can also bring their own lunch and/snacks.  For menu information, please visit: School Menus – Chula Vista Elementary School District (cvesd.org)

Breakfast service is from 7:45-8:10 every school day to all students.  If your child would like breakfast, please enter the gates at the West end of campus and eat at the lunch tables outside on the main playground.

Parents/guardians must submit their updated student information if they have a child re-enrolling with the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) for the 2024-25 school year. Starting May 28, 2024, parents/guardians of currently enrolled students will receive an email with a unique, personalized link to update their student details, such as emergency contacts and residency status. Families with multiple children will receive separate emails for each student. Please note that links are uniquely assigned and should not be shared with anyone.

For students attending CVESD under an Interdistrict Attendance Permit, the process is slightly different. After the submission, parents/guardians will receive a notification once the permit is approved. If you’re considering a Zone Transfer, please reach out to your child’s school office directly for further guidance. If your child will not attend CVESD next school year, parents/guardians must notify their child’s school before the end of the year. However, please note that CVESD does not require notification for students transitioning to the Sweetwater Union High School District for seventh grade. In this case, please register directly on their website to ensure a smooth transition for your child.

To secure your child’s place for the upcoming school year, all re-enrollment forms must be submitted by June 7, 2024. For additional information, please contact your child’s school or visit the Continuing Student Enrollment page.

Medication Pick Up

Please pick up your child’s medication in the Health Office by the close of the last day of school (June 5, 2024). Medications not picked up will be discarded as per the directive of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. A new medication form, completed by the physician and signed by the parent/guardian, is needed for the coming school year. Bring the completed form and the medication as packaged by the pharmacy to school at the beginning of the next school year. Please check the expiration date to be sure the medication is current for the next school year. Medication Request Form

Parent Organizations

Hi Everyone,

This week I thought I spend a little time discussing the different parent organizations we have on campus.

We are looking to fill 2 parent positions this year. If you are interested in being on the ballen for our School Site Council team. Please email me at cynthia.orr@cvesd.org. The community will have an opportunity to vote the first few weeks of school.
